This paragraph along with the whole nonsense diatribe is pure dodo climate science.
You can immediately throw it in the trash when you see imaginary atmospheric layers with T^4 arrows coming out of them up and down. This is total ignorance, because gases don't emit black body radiation, only photon by photon radiation at specific wavelengths based on absorption and reemission. A black body must be solid or liquid, and its number one power is the ability to absorb and emit radiation at all wavelengths. In the Earth-Sun climate system, only the Sun and the Earth are black bodies. The atmosphere doesn't qualify. Their total power output over all wavelengths comes nowhere close to anything times T^4, and indeed doesn't depend on T, only the incident photons.
End of this dodo line of reasoning.

Deconstructing Wilde and Mulholland’s Analysis of Earth’s Energy Budget

This type of analysis is like the blind leading the blind.
First and foremost, they never mention entropy. Without this the energy budget is a fairy story. Every time heat and work are interconverted, some energy is irretrievably dispersed (dissipated), adding to the Heat Death of the Universe.

Second, so-called back radiation from the atmosphere to Earth's surface has no heating power. It's not about the Stefan-Boltzmann Law, but the basic Planck Radiation Law. Once 5500C solar radiation heats Earth's surface to some temperature T, it begins cooling via the Planck radiation curve. Returning a small segment of this radiation to the surface can't make it into a new curve with a higher T - only more 5500C solar energy can do that. Downward recycled surface radiation can't even slow down the cooling below the Planck radiation temperature of the radiation. CO2's 15 micron radiation has a Planck radiation temperature of -80C, lower than the surface ever gets, so it just bounces around until entropy disperses it without heating anything.
Articles like this use what I like to call dodo climate science, based on the beehive of lies of the U.N. IPCC octopus whose sole raison d'entre is to find a pony in the manure and declare CO2 emissions evil. The only way that atmospheric H20 can be a greenhouse gas that can radiate IR back to Earth’s surface and raise its temperature is if it’s in gaseous form, because H20 is a polar molecule. Vapor contains water droplets, which are Planck radiators, but only at the temperature of the frigid ambient air, hence useless for surface heating. Even if there were gaseous H20 in the sky any radiation from it would likely soon be absorbed by water vapor, rendering it useless for surface heating. To even be in the sky, surface H20 has had to soak up a bunch of surface heat, cooling it from the get-go. The lapse rate insures that the atmosphere quickly grows frigid with altitude. When precipitation falls, it cools the Earth’s surface more than the Sun ever heated it.
Thus it’s a misnomer to call atmospheric H20 a greenhouse gas.It’s actually a refrigerator in the sky.

Yes, it's an imaginary climate crisis, because the leftist environmentalists and global Marxists at the U.N. IPCC have been feeding it with imaginary physics, which pretends that 5500C photons from the Sun have the same heating power as -80C photons from atmospheric CO2.
Their big con is to turn the Stefan-Boltzmann Law inside-out by claiming that just because a Planck black body at some temperature T radiates a power-wavelength curve that has a total power proportional to T^3, atmospheric "back radiation" can raise the body's temperature no matter how long/cold these wavelengths are, just based on total power. In reality, only photons at a temperature hotter than T can raise the body's temperature, and only if there enough of them. Hence, CO2's weak puny 15 micron photons have no heating power no matter their power.
